General Information - Information for VSAG Members

Information for VSAG Members

Background

The Victorian Sub-Aqua Group (VSAG) was established in 1954 and in 1964 formed into a Limited Liability Company. It remains today as one of the most active and highly respected scuba diving clubs in Victoria.

Club Motto

"Safety In Diving"

Committee

The affairs of VSAG are managed by a Committee of 12 elected members who have responsibility in the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Membership
  • Policy (Dive Standards) and Procedures
  • Meetings
  • Publicity
  • Activity Planning
  • Property (Keeping of Records)

A formal Constitution provides the overall guidelines for the conduct of VSAG affairs.

Newsletter

VSAG publishes a bi-monthly magazine called "Fathoms" which features articles and a calendar of forthcoming events. Articles from members are always welcome and form a very important part of Fathoms. Without your articles, Fathoms has little value or interest.

Meetings

General meetings of members and Committee meetings are held monthly.

Dive Notification

Members wishing to attend a scheduled dive, must notify the nominated Dive Captain at least three days before the scheduled dive.

Members are also required to confirm their dive booking with the nominated Dive Captain on the evening prior to the scheduled dive between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Please do not ring after 7:00 p.m.

For trips away, i.e. long weekends, Christmas etc., members wishing to attend must notify the Dive Captain / organiser as soon as possible after details are published in Fathoms. Holding deposits are usually required.

Cancellations

Members who, after advising they will be attending a dive, trip or social event, find they cannot attend, must notify the Dive Captain / organiser as soon as possible so that other members can be given the opportunity to fill the vacancy. Members who fail to give sufficient advance cancellation advice, may be required to pay their share in situations where club funds have been committed for bookings of camp sites, charter boats etc., or when minimum numbers were required to make booking arrangements.

Divers Responsibilities to the Dive Captain

  • Contact the Dive Captain prior to dive.
  • Be ready at the advertised time.
  • Obey the instructions of the Dive Captain.
  • Provide assistance to boat owners with launching and retrieving boats and take care not to cause damage with scuba gear whilst getting in or out of boats or on board.
  • Ensure diving gear is in good condition. The onus is on you to maintain your equipment.
  • Check with the Dive Captain before commencing dive and at completion of each dive.
  • Make any complaint or criticism regarding dive to Dive Captain at the time. Don't wait until everyone else has forgotten what may have occurred.

Divers Responsibilities to Themselves and Others

  • Arrive at the dive departure point well ahead of the published departure time so that you can be ready to depart on time.
  • Know who your buddy is and stay with that buddy.
  • Plan your dive and dive your plan.
  • Be physically fit and alert and free of alcoholic or drug induced hangover.
  • Ensure all scuba diving equipment is checked prior to each dive and serviced regularly.

Mandatory Safety Regulation

It is a safety requirement of VSAG that on every Club dive, all members and diving guests must:

  • have an Octopus Regulator in good working order; and
  • carry a Safety Sausage or SMB.

Please keep in mind that whilst diving with VSAG you will be required to follow the VSAG Safety Diving Guidelines.
