G'day,
A month or so ago a contact passed onto me a spreadsheet of the locations of dive sites he had collected from various sources over the years. I'm pretty sure some of his sources are commercial operators plus active divers with their own boats, so the accuracy of some of the coordinates is likely to be quite good. But which are accurate, and which aren't, no-one really knows.
He claims that most of the marks are the values being used by people in their GPS gear. But my contact doesn't have a GPS and boat so as to be able to verify the accuracy of the points. (The myriad of issues to do with the accuracy and provenance of dive site marks are simply mind blowing.)
Anyway, I added to the spreadsheet the dive site coordinates I'd already collected that weren't in his list. Most of my added sites are shore dives where I've used Google Earth to get the marks, which gives you an idea as to how accurate/inaccurate they are.
The other weekend, I updated the Dive Sites Map on this web site, see
www.vsag.org.au/dfmaps..._id=2.html, to reflect all of the dive site information I now have available.
To distinguish between the possible accuracy of the dive site marks, I've given each mark a source of GPS, Google Earth or unknown.
These marks are provided in order to provide a useful map of Victoria's dive sites and their relationship to each other.
DISCLAIMER: No claim is made to the accuracy of the dive site coordinates. Should anyone decide to use these coordinates in an attempt to locate and dive on a dive site, they do so entirely at their own risk.
If anyone else has accurate GPS marks for dive sites, I'm always interested in adding them to this growing collection.
Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett.
