President's Summer 2012-2013 Update
Committee News November 2012

Summer is now upon us and the weather is becoming much more appealing for diving. The water temperature has improved and I have had reports of 17C and climbing rapidly. Visibility has been good, even on slack water dives so it is time to pull out your gear, have it looked over and then check in for an easy club dive if you feel out of practice.

VSAG held it’s Christmas party last weekend and a what a great day it was. Thanks to all who turned up, it was great to catch up with you all. Cheryl and Lloyd’s new abode was a fantastic location and I very much appreciate the opening of their home to us – and all the work put in to make us feel welcome. The committee again did a great job in organizing and preparing the food as well as obtaining raffle prizes, resulting in a significant financial gain for the club.

The day highlighted the need to have more non diving activities to deepen the friendships within the club so any suggestions would be welcomed by the committee. I was recently encouraged by the group that supported the ‘rebirthing’ of JL’s trailer, these kinds of activities strengthen a club at many levels.

The committee has continued to focus on ways to ensure we maintain our exceptional safety record whilst diving. Last year we invested in more small oxygen kits and have upgraded our First Aid gear. It is likely we may purchase a larger oxygen kit this financial year more suitable for remote trips.
I have attended several presentations on DCI that have highlighted our need to continue a conservative approach to adequate surface intervals, safety stops and ascent rates.

John Lawler and Lloyd Borrett have now put together a ‘Starter Pack’ for boat owners presenting their boats for use within the club. We are always appreciative of having boats made available to the club to take divers out for diving, but have done little ‘officially’ to help ensure these are set up for optimal diving. Historically we have tended to mentor new boat owners (I was certainly given assistance) but now we have a pack of data to ensure that VSAG boat owners are well prepared.

Additionally boat owners met and agreed to having other boat owners and committee members check their boats out early in the season to ensure the basic legal requirements for safe boating as well as safe diving are in place. Our objectives are to put in place some minimum standards, encourage our boat owners to work together to pass on helpful experiences and ensure our club divers are given great diving experience.

Last year the diving at Christmas was superb and hopefully it will be repeated again this year. Keep an eye out for emails notifying of upcoming diving trips but also let us know if you are planning something during the week.

Forthcoming Events Feb-2012
Committee News News Flash from the bowels of VSAG HQ:

The President has announced that the club will be sending a delegation of battle hardened divers over to Bicheno in Tasmania this June to join in the Combined Tasmanian Clubs Weekend. Any body wearing a one piece semi dry wetsuit and expecting to survive will be in for a rude shock ( and possibly a free trans gender re-alignment!!)

In other late breaking developments it has been announced that the proposed trip to Heron Island for the annual Divers Festival will proceed and a select group of VSAGers is being assembled for the event and details will be revealed at the next meeting.

The annual Cray Bash Sth Australia March Long Weekend is all booked out. All interest now in who will win this years heaviest Cray.

Easter at the Prom is a non event again due to the ongoing issues from the storm last year and the club will announce a new Easter event at the up coming meeting. It is possibly a camping holiday to Spodgingtons Reef Caravan Park, but the details are yet to be finalised.

Summer 2011-2012 Diving Update:
Dive Days This summer has produced some excellent diving conditions. With most of the club hanging around town for the 2 week holiday season, we managed to get boats out quite a few times with over 30 different members joining in the action.

As has been the case over Christmas in recent years the best visability for the year has been over the holiday period. Average viz has been 20m with a couple of exceptional dives getting 30m!!! Who needs Truk Lagoon or Cairns when you can dive wrecks in Bass Strait smothered in fish in water that clear.

The club has dives planned every weekend (weather dependant) right through until June. Members recieve emails every week advising them of the plans and the forthcoming dives are announced in the "Fathoms" Magazine.

On the exotic dive trip side of things we have a Heron Island trip planned for July, a trip to Tasmania on the Queens Birthday weekend and an Overseas trip to The Phillipines as well. Come to the next meeting for details and availability.

Winter Diving with VSAG 2011- Update
Dive Days Its been a fairly ordinary start to winter, but on the last day of July we got a pearler of a day.

Several members went out from Queenscliff and a couple from Barwon Heads onto millpond conditions and 18C air temps.

Dives were successful onto the Lost Reef (35m) The Milora (40) and Neighbour Reef off Barwon heads (21m). Viz was in the order of 10-12m and the water a cool 11C.

The Queenscliff crews also got some amazing sightings of Humpback whales, that came up towards the boats and stuck around for over an hour. Awesome stuff![b]

Winter Diving with VSAG 2011
Announcements As we enter Winter this year the club will be organising dives on a fortnightly basis. If the weather proves too bad on the chosen week, then the following week will be targetted for the dive.

Dives will be planned the week before, taking into account the prevailing weather and the decision of where to dive will be made by the Dive Captain 1-2 days before the chosen day.

Keep an eye out for emails to members in the week before the dive. Winter last year gave us some memorable dives, hopefully, this one will too.

VSAG May 2011 Meeting: HMAS Sydney - Stuart Cannon
Social and Event News G'day All,

Come along on at 8 pm on Thursday, 19th May 2011 to the Victorian Sub-Aqua Group (VSAG - www.vsag.org.au) meeting and hear Dr Stuart Cannon present HMAS Sydney - the Wreck, the story and the Conspiracy.

HMAS Sydney was lost with all hands during the second world war as a result of a confrontation with the HSK Kormoran. It is considered Australia's worst wartime maritime disaster. Many of the German crew survived to tell the story and as a result of this various conspiracy theories started. This presentation will tell the story of HMAS Sydney, the relocation of the wreck sites and describe how the video footage and photographs were analysed together with modern computer tools to explain the events of the Sydney was lost. The presentation will include examples of the video, photographs, historical documents and well as graphical representations of the event. Finally some of the conspiracy theories will be put to bed.

This is the presentation Stuart gave at the OZTech Dive Conference in March this year.
