The weather gods gave us truly inspiring perfect weather for Sundays Dive Day from Flinders. Calm seas, light winds and next to no swell. Mildly warm to boot.
3 boats launched by 9.30am off the beach, and we set sail for Cape Schank. The 12 divers were greeted by a tranquil flat and clear ocean as we rounded the Cape. This area normally has a large swell even on calm days and it is a special treat to be able to dive in close to the rock platforms and explore rarely seen reefs.
The different boats all dived differing areas at first a few hundred yards apart, and then met for lunch. Not often you can eat lunch tucked in close to these rocks! After comparing notes and crayfish sightings we all decided to dive again, some at the lunch site as it probably had the best terrain and fish life. Sensational shallow reef in only 5-12m of crystal clear water with minimal surge.
A small number of crays elected to join us for the return trip home and a few more had their photo taken for posterity. A few of the divers had a third splash near the Flinders Gunnery on the way back, before we retrieved the boats and headed either home or to the local public house.
Autumn diving in Melbourne at its best.
