Terry Arnott, Old Friend of VSAG, Dies of Heart Attack |
 |
|
Many older members will remember Terry Arnott and be saddened to learn of his death last Saturday of a heart attack.
I cannot remember if Terry was ever a member of VSAG , but he was certainly well known to many of us in the 1970's and 80's and accompanied us to Truk lagoon on the first ever VSAG overseas trip in 1980.
Terry was passionate about shipwrecks and maritime archaeology and was one of the founding members of the Maritime Archaeology Association of Victoria (MAAV).
Along with fellow VSAG member Dave Carroll, Terry discovered the wreck of the Sydney Cove at Preservation Island in Bass Strait.
In more recent years he obtained formal qualifications in maritime archaeolgy and turned his passion into his career.
He moved to South Australia some years ago and last time that I spoke to him, he was looking forward to catching up with some of our members during a VSAG trip to Robe.
Terry's achievements in maritime archaeology and preservation are quite extensive and there is some information on the internet under Terry Arnott. (Try a Google search using "Terry Arnott".)
Terry had a huge amount of enthiusiasm and commitment and had only one speed... flat out... maybe this caused some bodily strress as he had to undergo heart surgery a few years ago, but that didnt slow him down.
His passing will be sadly missed by many. He was only 53.

Hello there VSAG members,
my name is Doug Arnott-Lewis, and I'm Terry's son. We've been googling his name ourselves, and stumbled upon this posting. I'd just like to say thankyou on behalf of our family. We knew he was highly regarded, but the love and respect we have received towards our father has overwhelmed us.
If anyone knew my father personally, and has a story they'd like to share for the journal we are compiling, please send an email to lifoloveletters@hotmail.com . We're still finding out so many things about Dad, and are always happy to hear if anyone here knows something we don't!
There will be a final rest and scattering of the ashes over the City of Launceston on the 10th of March, which I believe is the 25th anniversary of the legislation being passed that my father was integral in implementing. If anyone would like to say goodbye, please email me.
Doug Arnott-Lewis
