VSAG May Meeting - AE2 Submarine Expedition |
 |
|
Come along to the Thursday, 17 May 2007 meeting of VSAG and learn about the AE2 Submarine Expedition from Dr Stuart Cannon and Helena Cannon.
The Australian submarine AE2 was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles on ANZAC day in 1915. After damaging and sinking several vessels she was scuttled and came to rest in 72m in the Sea of Marmora, Turkey. Following her discovery in 1998 there has been significant interest in returning to the wreck to preserve her heritage. In September this year a team of divers will dive the AE2 to carry out a maritime archeological assessment of the site on behalf of the Australian government. This talk will describe the significance of the wreck, diving conditions and outline the expedition aims for September this year.
Presenters: Stuart and Helena Cannon
Stuart is an Advanced Trimix Instructor Trainer for both open circuit and closed circuit rebreather diving. Helena is an Extended Range instructor as well as an Advanced Trimix rebreather diver. Both are members of the organising committee for the "Silent Anzac AE2 Expedition" and will be diving during the September expedition. Professionally both bring important skills to the organisation and planning of this expedition; Stuart is a naval architect and is focusing on structural aspects of the assessment whilst Helena, a paramedic is involved with risk assessment and incident management.

G'day,
I would like to especially thank Stuart and Helena Cannon for their excellent presentation last night. It was simply the most informative, entertaining and enlightening diving related presentation I've ever seen. We look forward to having them come back again sometime after the expedition in September.
I'm told that more than 55 people attended the meeting. Indeed, with some 15 VSAG members off on a VSAG dive trip to Palau, we were outnumbered by the visitors from The Scuba Doctor, BSAC Melbourne, Monash University Dive Club etc.
Rob Timmers from SEAL Diving Services even made the journey up from Traralgon for the meeting. So we gave Rob the opportunity to tell us something about the diving out his way.
We look forward to seeing many of you back at subsequent VSAG meetings. And if you come, bring a dive buddy. The more the better.
Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett.
